In the early 1940s, the United States government commissioned some of the best filmmakers to create propaganda in support of the war effort. The works of the most famous of those directors, John Ford, John Huston, Frank Capra, and William Wyler, are the subjects of this collection. In contrast to today's environment (where many politicians think of Hollywood as the devil and most contemporary political cinema targets the government as irrational and inequitable) in the 1940s, everyone appeared...

"The Battle of Midway," directed by John Ford, provides a relatively brief account of the Japanese attack of American ships at Midway atoll. The film is comprised mostly of authentic footage from the battle, with dramatic narration by Henry Fonda. "Behind every cloud, there may be an enemy," he intones as American fighter pilots search the sky. The rest of the film mocks Emporer Tojo of Japan and portrays him as ruthless, bombing hospitals and churches as he tries to conquer...

A fourth compilation video that I (Argall) edited together, containing commercials for products and brands which are no longer available. The commercials are from the 1950s and 1960s. Sometimes the brand is still around but the exact product is gone, while in other cases both the product and brand are gone. The commercials range from "very good" to "very bad". Some of these come from the Adviews section, most do not.

LibriVox 's Most Wanted poetry collection. Have you ever suggested a book for recording by LibriVox only to be told by some good-for-nothing admin that it can't be done because it's not in the Public Domain in the US? Then this project is dedicated to you. It consists of ten early Public Domain poems by some of the authors mention of whose most popular works is most likely to come in close proximity to the word "sorry" in the LV forums. Included are: JRR Tolkien, Aldous Huxley, George...

Swamp Women, produced in 1955, was the first film ever directed by Roger Corman. The film follows undercover police officer Lee Hampton after she infiltrates a prison, befriends three female convicts, and helps them all escape. In reality, this planned escape is part of a larger plot to find a diamond stash hidden deep within the swamps of Louisiana. This is a fairly poor quality copy of the movie, with film splicing of a different print evident from 1:00:30 to 1:00:59 This film is in the...

LibriVox recording of Persuasion, by Jane Austen. Read by Moira Fogarty. "All the privilege I claim for my own sex ... is that of loving longest, when existence or when hope is gone." In persuasion, her last novel, Austen explores the theme of postponed but enduring love, delayed by class boundaries and excessive pride. Anne Elliot, the story's aged (27 year old) heroine, suffers from a decision that was forced upon her several years ago—to break off a relationship with Capn....

Took this recording from the downstairs area about midway back and slightly off to the left. I tried to give the mics a clear view to the stage by standing as close to the edge of the aisle as possible without having to get ushered back by the staffs flashlights (and without getting caught recording by the usher standing a few feet away the whole time). Overall I think it came out pretty decent considering.

LibriVox recording of Astrophil and Stella, by Sir Philip Sidney. Read by Elizabeth Klett. Astrophil and Stella is a sonnet sequence written by Philip Sidney, an Elizabethan poet and courtier. It details the frustrated love of Astrophil (whose name means "star-lover") for his beloved Stella (whose name means "star"). It is likely that Sidney based his poems on his own unrequited passion for a married woman. The sequence inspired other sonnet writers of the period, such as...
